This series of poems explores the life of the semi-mythical Pope Joan, said to have stolen her brother’s identity to study for the priesthood. In dealing with the story of a female pope, these poems explore the issues of a woman ‘living in a man’s world’, within an institution that still does not allow the ordination of women, as well as the universal fascinations of spirituality and faith within the Catholic Church.

Frank Dullaghan lives in Dubai and holds an MA with Distinction in Writing (University of South Wales). He has published three poetry collections (On the Back of the Wind, 2008; Enough Light to See the Dark, 2012; and The Same Roads Back, 2014, Cinnamon Press) and two haiku collections. He has been a children’s poetry judge for the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature since 2013, and was commissioned to provide the final English translation of HH Sheikh Mohammed (Ruler of Dubai and PM of the UAE)’s poetry, published as Flashes of Verse in 2014. Frank has just completed a first novel and is expecting to publish a fourth collection of poetry early in 2018.
