Britpop has burst its bubble, Cool Britannia has hit its come down and the Asbo Generation have come of age. It is 2004 in the North West of England. Fifteen years old, Lay Baby has nine months before school ends, before her mother signs the estrangement papers, before her name gets dropped into the council house raffle barrel and before the excuse ‘I’m a kid’ expires as abruptly as a child’s library card.
Left the blank journal of a friend after his death, Lay Baby begins writing.
V.A. Sola Smith completed a Contemporary Prose Fiction MA at Kingston University, graduating with Distinction in 2010. She has had flash fiction published
in Little Episodes’ anthology Brainstorms and her poems have been published in Lung Jazz: Young British Poets for Oxfam and Sculpted: An Anthology of the NorthWest and Eyewear’s anthologies The Best New British and Irish Poets 2016 and The Poet’s Quest for God. Her poetry pamphlet Almost Kid was published as part of Eyewear’s 20/20 Poetry Series in 2015.
This is a powerful, fresh, excoriating book written with an exquisite ear for harsh
dialogue and sudden, beautiful twists of phrase. — Alexander Masters
