I don’t remember exactly when I realised I loved him. I just know I blurted it out in the middle of a nightclub. Having to repeat myself, as he didn’t hear me the first time. Shouting into his ear, struggling to be heard over the music. ‘I said, I love you.’
That grin of his. No teeth showing, just his lips widening and spreading across his face.
‘I love you too, babe.'
That had been it. A quick kiss to seal the deal and that was the end of the conversation. Back to whatever we had been doing before that. We’d been out in a group and I’d managed to sidle us away from them, but we’d quickly rejoined the others and carried on into the night.
It had been the same night I’d seen how quickly that grin could turn.
