He should have known.
There should have been a sign.
A way of seeing what was about to happen.
He should have felt it.
It wouldn’t have helped him.
The clock was ticking, the minutes and seconds passing by, without him realising.
He would be dead in an hour and he wouldn’t see it coming.

He was entirely engrossed in the trove of evidence she brought for him. This was his chance to finally make a name for himself. Every step along the way, he has had to work five times as hard as all the rest to prove himself. Not anymore! This would earn him the rank and assignments he was worthy of – not because he was the son of the revered Chief they all idolized, but because he was the latest, improved model.
Dear old Dad let this one get away. With this evidence, he should be able to prove not only who the killer was, but also how corrupt the force has gotten. Each of the men were paid off handsomely to stall their investigation. If he could figure out who was behind such a conspiracy and the motive – he knows he’ll have won.
He’s amazed it was so easy for him to track her down and convince her to show him what she’s kept hidden for all these years. Of course, his good looks and charm had much to do with it. The ladies have never found it easy to turn him down.

The next thing he had to do was move quickly. They would be back before too long, but for now the house was empty and he was tied to a chair in the middle of the loungeroom. If he could hop over to the kitchen and open the cupboards somehow he would have a knife, or maybe he could try a move that is probably only realistic in films. Swaying the chair back and forward until in broke. Either way he needed to act now.
